Chance of showers expected tonight into Sunday

Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008 | 1:29 p.m.

Today's blustery southwesterly winds are holding off any scattered showers for the Las Vegas Valley until late this afternoon or into the evening. That's when a cold pool of air from the Pacific Northwest plunges southward across the Great Basin and into Southern Nevada.

The National Weather Service said this morning that the bulk of the moisture will stay north of the Las Vegas Valley in Lincoln County, but showers are more likely in the Las Vegas area overnight.

Today's high temperature is expected to be 83 degrees. Friday's high of 86 ended a string of 113 days that the high temperature had reached at least 90 degrees, the weather service said.

The top five records for 90-degree-plus consecutive days are:

• 118 days starting May 7, 1940.

• 114 days starting May 29, 1956.

• 113 days starting June 12, 2008.

• 109 days starting May 26, 1994.

• 108 days starting May 31, 1946.

Once the cold front passes east of Nevada, Sunday's high is expected to reach 80 degrees with winds 7 to 13 mph, and a low of 61 degrees, the weather service said.

For the week ahead, gradual warming will occur and no sign of any moisture is in sight for awhile.
