Fall Health Festival to be held
Centennial Hills Hospital Medical Center is hosting a Fall Health Festival from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 18 in the main lobby of the hospital, 6900 N. Durango Drive.
A variety of local health focused organizations will offer free health screenings and information on common health issues, including diabetes, cholesterol and weight-loss.
There will be $10 flu shots, maternity tours, a sneak peak of their future Level II NICU, on-site massages, free give-aways, face painting for the kids and balloon artists. Area restaurants will offer free food samples. Expectant mothers will get a chance to win a modern baby nursery set from Olive & Bean Boutique. The estimated value of the nursery is $2,500.00.
During the event, educational seminars will be offered on warning signs of a heart attack and breast cancer awareness. For more information call 702-835-9700.
Canyon group to hold barbecue
The Friends of Red Rock Canyon and The Howard Hughes Corp. are hosting a sunset barbecue, guided hike and moonlight concert in Red Rock Canyon on Oct. 4.
The festivities will be held in the Red Springs picnic area just off Calico Basin Road. The hike will take place at 5 p.m. followed by the barbeque and concert at 6 p.m.
The event is for members of the Summerlin Friends of Red Rock Canyon, an organization dedicated to preserving and protecting Red Rock Canyon.
Membership is $250 per family and includes merchandise, a monthly newsletter, Red Rock annual passes and invitations to member-only events.

Pug Rescue planning Halloween picnic
The Southern Nevada Pug Rescue, a non-profit organization, will host its seventh annual Pug-O-Rama Picnic on from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 26 the Hills Park, 9100 Hillpointe Road, in Summerlin. The Halloween-themed event will feature costume contests, prizes, raffles and a silent auction.
Pug owners are encouraged to dress up their pugs, pack a picnic and enjoy a few hours socializing with other pug owners. Pug-O-Rama Picnic tickets are available now for $10 per person, $7 for children 6-12, and children 5 and under are free. A check or money order should be made to SNPR and sent to P.O. Box 20875, Las Vegas, NV 89112, along with your name, number of guests and contact number. Tickets will be sold at the door for $15.
Pug-O-Rama helps the rescue to raise funds for spaying, neutering, shots, exams and other medical necessities that take place when a rescued pug is brought into the organization.
Pet Sanctuary to host mile walk
For the eighth year in a row, Heaven Can Wait Sanctuary is inviting pet lovers and owners to walk a mile in an effort to save the lives of pets that otherwise would be put down in local shelters each year.
This year’s Lose-a-Pound With Your Hound will start at 9 a.m. on Oct. 19 at Bunker Family Park, near Tenaya Way and Alexander Road.
Funds raised from the event will provide help for homeless cats and dogs in the community, as well as support for the numerous programs HCWS offers.
The walk will offer food, games, prizes, obedience training and more.

Library to celebrate Scottish heritage
The St. Andrews Society of Southern Nevada and The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District are presenting the 9th annual “Something Scottish,” a free celebration of Scottish Heritage from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 4 at the Rainbow Library Amphitheater, near Buffalo Road and Cheyenne Avenue.
The Desert Skye Pipes and Drums, The Las Vegas Highland Dancers, Mary, Queen of Scots and The House of Stuart will make appearances, and children’s activities will be available including a Child Identification Program, Scottish food, Haggis tasting and more.

Police enforce teen seatbelt regulations
In a partnership with Joining Forces, Metro Police recently participated in a teen seat belt enforcement campaign.
Between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sept. 19 and Sept. 20 Metro’s South Central, Southeast and Bolden area commands conducted enforcement that resulted in 536 total citations/arrests, 95 of which were seat belt related.
The objective of the campaign was to reduce traffic fatalities among teens within the age group of 16 to 20 years old.
The effort was partially funded by a grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety/Office of Traffic Safety.

Easter Seals to hold Trunk or Treat
Easter Seals Southern Nevada is hosting its 3rd annual Trunk or Treat event from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 25. The event will take place at 6200 W. Oakey Blvd near the intersection of Charleston and Jones boulevards.
Admission is $15 per family and includes trick-or-treating, face painting, games and a haunted house. The event is open to the public and children will be trick-or-treating from car trunk to car trunk.
“We’re asking for 25 volunteers to give out candy from the trunk of their cars. Costumes are welcomed,” said Erin Fox, development director for Easter Seals Southern Nevada.
Easter Seals Southern Nevada provides programs and services for children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities in the Las Vegas Valley.
“This is a feel good event for all children and adults with or without disabilities,” Fox said. “Hopefully people will become more familiar with who we are and what we do.”

Health group to hold fundraiser
The Southern Nevada Medical Industry Coalition, or SNMIC, will host a fundraiser from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 16 to raise funds for its efforts in improving the quality of health care in the region.
SNMIC was founded in 2002 and now consists of more than 400 volunteers throughout Clark County. Some of the organization’s goals include improving the workplace environment within health care institutions, retaining nurses and recruiting needed health care professionals.
The event is a cocktail reception and will take place at the home of David Dahan, managing partner for Orgill/Singer & Associates and president of the Henderson Chamber of Commerce board of directors. Dahan’s residence is located at 9101 Alta Dr. inside One Queensridge Place.
The fundraiser is open to the public and admission is $100 per person. Walk-ins are accepted but RSVP is preferred.

Health District encourages flu shots
The Southern Nevada Health District is well supplied with vaccines to combat influenza and is encouraging everyone to get their shots as the flu season is under way.
The Health District offers the vaccine Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at its five public health centers. The Health District also set up temporary flu shot clinics in public places throughout the valley.
Patients must present their insurance card or Medicaid voucher at the time of service. For those not covered or without proof of insurance, the cost for flu vaccination is $30. Pneumonia shots are $45. The Health District also accepts Medicare Part B, Medicare Railroad Part B, Medicaid.
People with the highest risk of catching the flu are those age 50 and over, pregnant women, people between six months old and 49 with certain medical conditions, health care workers and household contacts of people who are at high risk.
Also, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends vaccinations for children between the ages of six months and 59 months.
To prevent the spread of the virus, avoid close contact with people who are sick, stay home if you are sick, cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, wash your hands and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Flu season generally peaks in January or February in Southern Nevada.
