Sudan president says charges threaten Darfur peace

Thu, Oct 2, 2008 (10:33 a.m.)

Sudan's president has warned that attempts to prosecute him on charges of waging a genocidal campaign in Darfur are undermining the peace process aimed at stopping the violence.

The Hague, Netherlands-based International Criminal Court indicted President Omar al-Bashir in July, and the court's chief prosecutor is seeking an arrest warrant.

Al-Bashir said Thursday that since the indictment, rebels have distanced themselves from negotiations. He said "it will have a catastrophic impact on the stability of the entire region."
