The UNLV men's golf team finished tied for third at the 8th Annual Turtle Bay Intercollegiate played at Turtle Bay Resort Golf Course in Kahuku, Hawaii.
The tournament was the final of the fall season for the 18th ranked Rebels who finished at 14-under-par 850, seven shots behind tourney champion Texas.
Junior Eddie Olson capped a superb fall season finishing tied for 10th at 5-under-par 211. Olson had three top five finishes in four starts this fall and recorded a scoring average of 69.67. He was rated 19th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Men's Collegiate Rankings. Freshmen Derek Ernst tied for 18th at 3-under 213 after a final-round 1-under 71, and junior Brett Kanda finished tied for 34th at even-par 216 after a final-round 3-over 75.
The Rebels played the event without All-Mountain West player Seung-su Han who is working his way through the PGA Tour Qualifying School in an attempt to win a Tour card for 2009.
The spring season will start for UNLV with the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Feb. 2 to 3.
Golf 20/20 announces new player program
GOLF 20/20, the World Golf Foundation's initiative focused on the development and support of programs to grow interest and participation in golf, recently announced the creation of a new adult player development program at the 2008 GOLF 20/20 Forum at World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Fla.
The Get Golf Ready Program is targeted to adults who have had minimal contact with the game. The initiative is designed to introduce the game through a series of five lessons that focus on basic instruction, rules, etiquette and values.
The program will be offered in 2009 at hundreds of golf facilities across the United States for $99, although pricing may vary depending on location. The goal of the program is to have 3,000 sites by 2011. Locations and a new Web site dedicated to the program will be unveiled this spring.
The program is one of several that GOLF 20/20 has implemented to counter effect the declining number of golfers in the United States.
