LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
We have no business growing right now
Monday, Nov. 24, 2008 | 2:04 a.m.
Regarding the Las Vegas Sun’s story from last Monday, headlined “Growth-preservation question still to be answered,” by Mike Trask and Joe Schoenmann:
Are we, the people of North Las Vegas, ready to sell our rich archaeological treasures for the sole purpose of building more houses when we already have a glut of homes which have been foreclosed on?
I also find that the cushion that Nellis Air Force Base requests to further the safety of our people is a valid concern. The training exercises they run in this area are done where at this time there are no homes or businesses in the way in the event of an accident. Also, when we have the daily threats to our country’s security, it is wise of us to have well-equipped, well-trained officers and enlisted people capable of doing the best they can to protect the people of not only North Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Valley but also of the United States.
Do we really need to grow so big that we won’t be able to take care of every one of our people in a disaster? The bigger we get the more people will fall between the cracks. We have too many problems economically now. Can you imagine multiplying that by adding more homes and businesses to the problem?
Let’s slow down and leave some wide open spaces for nature and man to join together in harmony. Don’t dig up the past to build on the future — it may be our undoing if we can’t learn to preserve enough land in a pristine condition.
