Tropic Starr
Best known for an eclectic mix of Polynesian tunes, So-Cal duo Tropic Starr will bring a '50s and '60s playlist to the Railroad Pass Hotel & Casino in Henderson for the Viva Nevada Classic Car Show Friday and Saturday.
Nina Fraire Nomura, a native Hawaiian who lives in Orange County, Calif., said the duo will play requests that will get people on the dance floor.
"We really enjoy (Las Vegas) because it's a fresh audience — way different than California. Vegas expects excitement. When they make requests we are able to do them. In California, we are more laid back. They don't make a lot of requests. In Vegas they test you. It's fun keeping up with the Vegas crowd."
The singer plays percussion with her husband, David Nomura, who plays the guitar and keyboard.
They swing into Southern Nevada monthly to perform at such venues as the Hacienda Hotel & Casino and Gold Strike Hotel & Gambling Hall.
The duo plays Top 40, Latin, country, '50s-'70s and rhythm and blues. They've played together for about 20 years, after first meeting at the Disneyland Hawaiian-themed venue, where they both performed. She was a hula dancer, he was a guitar player. They've taken their Polynesian sound across the country. As the entertainment economy worsens, Nomura keeps a sunny outlook.
"We're getting more calls in Nevada because they (venues) are looking at smaller groups to get what they need. They are considering duos and trios rather than bigger bands."
Tropic Starr plays in the Siderail Lounge from 6 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. There is no cover charge. The Railroad Pass is at 2800 South Boulder Highway.
