Letter to the editor:

Detroit rescue, limits on drilling don’t mix

Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008 | 2:04 a.m.

Let me see if I understand this. The Big Three automakers are looking for a bailout in the tens of billions of dollars. The Democrats who now hold power are considering it. Aren’t these the same Democrats who are limiting our ability to drill for oil?

Could one of these Democratic “leaders” please explain why taxpayers should be on the hook to bail out car manufacturers when they won’t allow fuel for these very same vehicles to be produced?

Discussion: 3 comments so far…

  1. But the point is, IF the Big 3 are not bailed out, and they eventually go under in a year or two, then the only cars that will be on sale will be the much smaller "Dinky Toys" from abroad, which use much less gas, therefore the need to drill for oil at home will not be needed

  2. "Aren't these the same Democrats who are limiting our ability to drill for oil?"

The Democrats aren't "limiting our ability to drill for oil". It is the current leaseholders of the drilling rights that aren't drilling. See these links:

Not all of their leased "lands" are production-worthy; but of the leases that are, they STILL haven't done anything with them.

Do you need a financial wizard to tell you why?

  3. Automakers have requested government-guaranteed loans, not a bailout.

The Democrat-controlled Congress also allowed the ban on offshore to expire.

And, as Patricia so correctly pointed out, the oil companies have shown that they are unwilling/unable to drill for oil in lands already available.

So, Mr. Feher, what's your point?
