Officers are continuing to investigate the death of a 49-year-old Las Vegas driver who was killed in a one-vehicle accident early this morning in northwest Las Vegas.
The person's name has not yet been released, pending notification of relatives, Metro Police said.
The accident occurred while the person was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer at 3:25 a.m. east on Cheyenne Avenue, west of El Capitan Way, according to police.
Officers said that the driver, for unknown reasons, suddenly veered the SUV south. The vehicle struck the median dividing the right and center travel lanes, then went up on the south sidewalk, struck a block wall and a street light pole before coming to rest, officers said.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by responding medical personnel, police said.
The accident is the 103rd traffic-related fatality this year in Metro Police's jurisdiction.

LIVING AT THE TOP OF I 215 AND CHEYENNE, I HERE A LOT OF THE PRE-NOISE BEFORE AN ACCIDENT MAY ACCCURE. LAST NIGHT AROUND 3:AM I AWOKE OUT OF A DEAD SLEEP TO A NOISE THAT WAS MOST DISTURBING. SO MUCH THAT I COULDNT GO BACK TO SLEEP FOR SEVERAL HOURS. I THOUGHT ABOUT GETTING IN MY CAR TO VENTURE OUT TO SEE WHAT I COULD FIND BUT HAD RESERVATIONS BECAUSE OF WHAT I MIGHT FIND.
THE SCREECH OF THE BREAKS SEEM TO BE RIGHT OUTSIDE MY WINDOW AND THEN CONTINUED FOR WHAT SEEMED TO LAST FOR EVER ONLY TO FINALLY GET FAINT. AFTER LOOKING FOR SOME EVIDENCE IT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN THE ACCIDENT ON GRAND CANYON AND CHEYENNE. THIS WOULD MAKE SENCE FOR THE DISTANCE I HEARD THE BREAKS LOCKING UP, BUT THAT SEEMS LIKE A LONG DISTANCE BEFORE THE VEHICLE CAME TO REST.
