LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
Once the election is over, let’s pull together
Monday, Nov. 3, 2008 | 2:04 a.m.
Regarding the Las Vegas Sun’s Saturday story headlined “Taking it personally — strong feelings about the election generate tension in relationships”:
This year people have been involved in our election as rarely before. The downside to this is that there is a lot of anger toward the opposition candidate and ideas.
I worry about our future when the campaigns spend so many months trying to persuade Americans to hate or fear what the other candidate will do. The prevalence of negative campaigning has created distaste and scorn for the opposition candidate. It is hard to see how we will function as a whole and be able to put aside all the negatives. I am afraid for us if somehow voters cannot acknowledge the basic worth of the other candidate.
We are lucky this election to have two very qualified men running. Both have ideas they think will serve America.
In the interest of full disclosure, I am an Obama supporter. I believe he will do a better job than McCain. However, if McCain becomes president, our country will go on to do good things. There will be actions I oppose. But two adults in one household have different philosophies about running the house.
One can hardly expect our large population to be in agreement on how to improve and maintain our nation. The goal is to strike a balance and reach a compromise, where no one is satisfied completely but everyone has something of what he thinks is necessary.
After all, the bottom line is that we all want America to stay strong and vibrant, and offer a future to all.
I hope we can all agree to find ways to work together to create a future for America — even if it turns out to be different from what each had hoped for.

If McCain wins, absolutely I will pull together - with all of the other activists who oppose his kind of policies. I am not about to get on board with policies that are going to further damage this nation. Let McCain tax his own health benefits; leave mine alone.
Teaser,
McCain's healthcare plan isn't that good but neither is Obama's. Obama is also misleading you on McCain's healthcare plan.
Currently, your employer provided healthcare is an untaxable benefit (meaning the employer pockets some extra profit by paying you less in exchange for buying you health care).
Small companies and private individuals do not get this benefit. If they want health insurance they are taxed on the income they earn to pay for this insurance.
McCain's plan creates parity so both private individuals and small businesses enjoy the same benefit as large corporations. That is why he's got the health insurance tax credit.
Now a better plan would be to allow individuals and small companies to buy health insurance policies from any state (as big corporations are allowed to do) while also pushing health savings account to encourage healthcare conservation so prices are reigned in.
"Let McCain tax his own health benefits; leave mine alone." - Teaser
And how is this any different from telling Obama to use his own money to support his half-brother and aunt (who lives in public housing) instead of our tax money?
Our great Country is not in the best of economic health. For the last few months there has been an abundance of name calling, and finger pointing. I agree with the author of the letter to the editor; When this election is in the books, and the winner has been determined, it will take the nation as a whole to help get things turned around. There has been so much venom spewed around, in the direction of both candidates, and to what end? Will any of the anger, and in some cases hate, fix anything? No I don't want my health care benefits taxed. No I don't want to pay higher taxes. No I don't want my tax dollars to continue to go to Iraq. But what I really don't want, is to see this Country that I love, that I served in the Navy, to continue on a downward spiral. It will be interesting to see if the people who put so much effort and energy into berating the "Opposing" candidate will put any effort into doing anything at all to help make things better, going forward. Will they lift a finger to get involved in their community, politically or otherwise, or will they just move on to complaining about the next person or thing they don't like?
I think Biden is a mean angry hothead. all he does is scream at people.
Redneck, bitter, gun toting, double down, double sided, self-dealing, condescending, patronizing, disdainful, haughty, pompous, lofty, arrogant, self-aggrandizing, supercilious, sarcastic, mocking, vitriolic, misleading, lying, disdainful, scurrilous, shadowy .....
These are a few of the words used by Obama's Billion Dollar campaign against McCain.
Of course Republicans will rush to support selfish tax increases, spreading the wealth, taxing jobs away, and waving the white flag in the middle east.
Anything the inspirational messiah persona wants us to do.
We are here to serve Obama.

They all sound accurate. Except supercilious, I don't know if I agree with that one. Oh, and Billion. I think that's a little high.
1. First, Obama will save America.
Obama will take from the rich and give to the poor. People who pay income taxes will pay higher income taxes so that people who pay no income taxes will get checks for $1,000's of dollars.
Obama is going to hand out welfare cash like it is candy.
Obama then is going to try to buy the middle class vote by giving them $1.95 more a day in middle class tax cuts over McCain's plan. $1.95 a day will bring much happiness in lives of Americans.
Every day, Obama is promising more tax cuts and spending plans. Obama will be the trillion dollar man. Obama will be the first president to generate trillion dollar annual budget deficits every year he is in office.
Next, Obama will save the world. Many leaders are excited about Obama being the world leader. Chavez, Castro and Hamas have given their support to this wonderful future leader. There will be joy and dancing in the streets in Iran, Palestine, Pakistan and Havana when Obama is anointed Messiah of the World.
nance originally posted this, but as you can see, it is timeless.
tokoloshe (what a clever name)... I don't know if you've noticed, but your friends the repubs have run this country into the ground. Bankrupt. Reports today the treasury is borrowing another 600 billion; A TRILLION between last July and this December. If you were a dem, and had the dough... well, maybe not
the best example but you get my meaning. You reap what you sew. It's reaping time.
or sow.
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; and Maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6 -year- old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Tylenol, sun lotion or a Band-Aid to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents , Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.
He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim.
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on.
COMMON SENSE tells me that when an administration makes such a complete
disaster out of our country, and the
person that is running in his stead
has the exact same doctorine as the
aforementioned administration, that
I should run as fast and as far away
from such buffoonery as is possible.
Fooled twice. Not thrice. Obama/Biden.
For the USA to continue its happy go lucky way towards a complete economic collapse is quite obvious. Should McCain come to power then the process will be quick, whereas if Obama gets the job, it will be a long drawn out procedure. The USA does not want change from the system that is laughed at from across the world, The American Way. Perhaps a socialistic system is what is needed, but just to mention that word, and everyone thinks of Russia
tokoloshe - "I think Biden is a mean angry hothead. all he does is scream at people."
You don't actually know much about McCain do you? These are HIS trademark qualities.
I imagine that is why you righties ran him this time around. Your campaign is all fear based emotion and anger with zero substance.
Unfortunately for you, people want hope this time. It's difficult to repackage anger and fear as hope. It's sort of like trying to put lipstick on a pig.
I promise to treat a President Obama with the same respect that the left has treated President Bush.
Somehow I think that by May 2009 or so people like johnvegas, gmag, even pattibaby (heck patricialv, if The One can get away with being sexist it is perfectly ok, correct sweetie? (Or is only He allowed to call women by sexist names? Maybe you would prefer Bros before Hos?)) will remember the past 8 years as a glorious time of spirited, fair, loyal opposition. Meanwhile starting January 21, 2009, any attempt by conservatives to speak up against Obama's policies will be viewed as racist, evil, and beyond the pale.
No matter who wins America is still screwed.
Cannon-Asesrd "I promise to treat a President Obama with the same respect that the left has treated President Bush.'
Uh oh, here it comes everyone! Just so we can all be prepared for the right wing's emotional collapse, here are the phases our right minded friends will experience. Please, be compassionate!
Shock - Republicans first reactions will be one of shock and complete disbelief. Shock affects people in different ways: everything can seem unreal; people can feel numb, withdrawn, detached; many republicans will feel completely disorientated and won't know what to do with themselves. Many will experience anger, guilt, despair, emptiness, helplessness and hopelessness.
Denial - When the shock begins to wear off, many republicans will go through a stage of denial during which they cannot accept the reality of the loss. Thoughts of challenging election results may occur at this point. Republicans may scream words like "ACORN!!! ACORN!!!" to random strangers on the street and mumble incoherently while staring at election results.
Anger And Guilt - It is common to experience anger, sometimes guilt and often both. Many republicans will find themselves asking: "Why has this happened"? "Why me"? "Why in the hell did I EVER vote for Bush"?
Despair And Depression - In the first few weeks the whole situation may seem unbearable. Many Republicans may feel there is little purpose in life and nothing of interest in the outside world.
Some republicans, like Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, may begin to question their own sanity and think that they are going mad. This is in fact mearly the realization of pre-existing conditions for them.
Acceptance - Eventually republicans will pass through the period of depression and begin to accept the loss. This usually happens with the passage of time and, as the pain eases. Examples would be Al Haig, Spiro Agnew, and Charlton Heston and Mitt Romney.
Have a wonderful day!
John, you never got past the temper tantrum stage of anger and guilt in the last 8 years. "HALIBURTON!!! HALIBURTON!!!" "BU$HITLER!!! BU$HITLER!!!" "I want to roll the dice a bit more with this affordable housing thing!!!" (oh that was Rep Lisp D-Mass, my bad.) And the left is supposed to be the "reality based community."
Hey I can accept the election, you all stole it fair and square. Just curious john, how many $199.87 donations did you make to the Messiah's campaign?
john people like you have truly shown us The Way to get things done. Behave like a jackass for 8 years and eventually people will get tired of it and vote for Change just to shut you the hell up.
Again I will give BO the full respect that you gave President Bush. Heck I will even give BO the same support that Karter Kool-aid drinkers gave to President Reagan.
Actually I do look forward to President BO. I predict that within a year I will actually be classified as rich. No seriously. For the first time in my life. Of course by that time the $250K "rich level" will drop to $150,000 (opps already done per Gov Richardson's definition, $200,000 per Biden) down to $100,000, down to $50,000. Bingo! I am RICH!!! WooHoo. Heck I look forward to basically saying, screw it, the government will take care of me. I don't need to work so hard.
On a serious note, I do look forward to a President BO. We might, just maybe finally get past Affirmative Action. Unless most liberal racists believe that despite someone who is of a minority racial type being elected to the highest office in the land, minorities are still to incompetent to do anything unless they are given special treatment. Actually that nationally conversation might be the highpoint of the next 4 years. (Somehow I doubt it will because the liberals who will be running things are still racist in their thought process.)
(On a side note, come on Sun website idiots... You really filtered BU$HITLER because it contained the word $hit in there... For goodness sakes... how I can get in the proper liberal GoodSpeech mindset if I can't wittily compare Bush with Hitler...? After all it is Doubleplus GoodSpeech, so it should be ok, right?)
Tokoloshe, don't recycle nance's trite garbage on Obama's tax plan. I'll ask you what I asked nance:
1) Do you have direct deposit from the federal government?
If so, will you be getting $1.95/day deposited in your account?
2) Is it more likely that the $1.95/day will actually be given to you in January/February of the following year in your tax refund?
If so, do you not want $712?
3) If $712 is a slap in the face to you, would you please sign over that pittance to me, who can use that money?
4) Bush only gave us $2.19/day. Did the $0.24 really make that much of a differnce?
Answer if you dare.
Oh well welcome President BO. Congrats. Try not to stink too bad; although, I know you will.
I fully support my new jackass overlords. BUSH=EVIL. WARCRIMINAL!!! We are less safe now than we were 7 years ago. In the 80s and 90s we had embassies bombed, planes and ships hijacked, but we were more safe then! Since 2001 outside a war theater we have had no attacks but we are less safe. But hey that's ok, back to a mo better safe time in life.
