Letter to the editor:
Iraq exit strategy was nonexistent
Thursday, May 29, 2008 | 2:02 a.m.
I have heard people say that we are not in a war in Iraq, we are occupiers who are occupying the country.
This is such a truthful statement.
Armed American troops patrolling the streets of Iraq are sitting ducks for the anti-American zealots who so freely are entering the country, because our American military saw fit to disband both the Iraqi military and the police force after invading Iraq and meeting with little resistance.
After having decided to invade Iraq using “cooked intelligence” and false pretenses, President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and company had no form of an exit strategy — and had no idea of the chaos that would unfold once the Iraqi military was disbanded.
Which leads to my next point.
Now that we have been in Iraq for five-plus years, both Bush and John McCain say we will not leave Iraq until we achieve victory.
Do they know what will define an American victory in Iraq?
I don’t think so.
But I know that each day we remain in Iraq brings more American deaths (4,000-plus and counting), while those in Washington twiddle their thumbs without any idea when to say enough is enough — let’s get the heck out of there.
