Letter to the editor:
Real losers in energy crisis are Americans
Tue, May 20, 2008 (2:02 a.m.)
It appears that Nevada Sen. Harry Reid and the Democratic Congress, along with the environmentalists, are keeping us from drilling for oil in Alaska as well as in our oceanic coastal areas — which should have been done years ago, but Bill Clinton vetoed the bill.
It appears these people are more concerned about the birds, bees, fish and other wildlife than they are about the welfare of the American people, who have to pay high fuel prices. We are forced to buy oil from countries that couldn’t care less about the USA’s needs for fuel, and they are taking advantage of us by charging outrageous prices for their oil.
Big Oil is also taking advantage of us by charging high gasoline prices. These high prices are causing hardships for people in all walks of life. People are losing jobs and food prices are going higher and higher — all as a result of high fuel costs being passed on to the customers.
Our economy nationwide would not be in a recession right now if we had started developing new sources of energy and drilling for more of our own oil years ago. In conclusion, all of these politicians and the environmentalists would really enjoy every American living by candlelight.

Mr. Abbott,
Get real. Even if drilling in Alaska could provide us with a million barrels of oil per day - an optimistic assumption - worldwide oil consumption is 84 million barrels per day. Do you really think the addition of 1 million barrels per day of supply is going to change the price of a barrel of light sweet crude? Especially when all the Saudis have to do to get the price of a barrel of oil to spike is to threaten to cut production.
I love the way people talk about Alaskan oil as being "our own." It is no such thing. It belongs to the oil companies that suck it out of the ground. They, in turn, charge us the going rate for it. Exxon Mobil doesn't give us a break on the price of oil because the got it from Alaska as opposed to buying it from the Saudis or the Canadians.
Supply side fixes to the oil problem can't and won't work, not in the short run and most definitely not in the long run. The only way to solve our problems with oil is to stop using so much oil. Raising CAFE standards to 30 MPG would save far more oil than Alaska could ever provide.
JohnF-
How right you are. I'm so tired of hearing people blame democrats and environmentalists for their problems with energy. Neither the D's or the E's got us here. We all have to take responsibility for our actions and that means being more efficient in our lives.
The mpg standard in this country is a joke!
The big energy crises will occur in 20-25 years from now.
With no major quantity of new coal, nuclear or gas plants being built and with older systems retiring, there will not be enough energy to get us through the summer months.
The magic beans of solar and wind is so expensive to build and it will leave us far short of what we need.
In 20 to 25 years, energy prices will be through the roof and will have rolling brown/black outs during the summer months.
Gagging and choking America's energy supplies IS the mission of the social communist as shared misery is what they seek.
Liberals hate themselves so much, they're more than willing to corrode from within, hurting all of us.
Both "Onion" and JohnF and cohorts were smashed down hard last week or so on this. Squaak, squaaakkk..............
The liberal keeps we all closer to the global Hate-America threats, while decrying high energy prices (and the massive TAX) to the nearest TV camera.
Democrats ARE responsible for the failed governMENTAL politics which placed America in this beholdened position re: energy = favoring those who hate our guts and want us dead.
"The liberal keeps we all closer to the global Hate-America threats"
Aren't the fascists supposed to be in favor of English as the national language? If so, I'd suggest they throw in a course on grammar as well.
Democrats are the only facists around.
Sniping impotently at internet shorthand just says you have no counter-argument to the question at hand. A e-rule as old as e-ing itself.
Thanks for forfeiting the points of the rest of my post. I'll take it........
NVMakz,
What points in the rest of your post? It was just a series of insults. Make a cogent argument and perhaps someone will respond.
1. Fascists. Learn to spell.
2. Counterargument is one word, not hyphenated.
3. "An e-rule" not "a e-rule."
4. "I'll take them," not "it." Your referring to "points," plural, not the post, which is singular.
C'mon, dude. Reading is fundamental!
And you have no new arguments. It's the same debunked drivel, ad nauseum. Is there a "side 2" to your record?
I'm bored.
