LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Let’s try rationing, and not just of gas

Monday, May 19, 2008 | 2:02 a.m.

Charles Cordova’s Saturday letter to the editor on employing as many energy-saving methods as possible brings to mind that on May 15, 1942, wartime gasoline rationing went into effect in 17 Eastern states, limiting sales to three gallons a week for nonessential vehicles. I remember the stickers on cars reading, “Is This Trip Necessary?”

It might be time to reinstitute a policy for limiting gas for nonessential vehicles, although the public would be hard-pressed to decide what to them is essential and what is not. It would be as difficult to segregate the two, just as it is for campaigners to desist from making scurrilous and ill-founded remarks about negotiating with terrorists. However, it makes sense to try both.
