LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

America is no longer the envy of the world

Sunday, May 11, 2008 | 2:04 a.m.

What is wrong with this picture?

The United States is in an unwanted, unpopular, unjustified war in Iraq, with thousands of our young soldiers dead.

There are soaring record profits for oil companies while the rest of us go broke trying to fill our tanks just to get to work.

We also have a lack of universal health care, as nearly 50 million Americans lack basic health care, a situation laughable to other civilized nations.

The housing market is set to leave many homeless, or close to it. If you do pay your mortgage as agreed, expect to pay three times the original purchase price by the time you are finished in 30 years.

The price of food, one of our essentials, is on the rise with no end in sight — you better seek a second job to help feed your kids.

There is a lack of a serious wage increase, or help from our corporate leadership, to assist in filling our gas tanks and food pantries.

Regarding the outsourcing of jobs to other countries, so now when you call your bank or credit card company you may get someone in Asia where it’s 3 a.m. and his English isn’t so hot. It then takes you an extra 30 minutes to accomplish what used to take five minutes in the good ol’ U.S. of A.

On global warming, environmentalists say we lead the way in helping to destroy Mother Earth. Wonderful!

Thousands of illegal immigrants seek refuge here every day, but maybe when this piece is translated for them they will have second thoughts.

The United States has the most unpopular presidential administration in the modern era ... war profiteering at its finest!

Our kids go to school nowadays in fear of being shot or blown up.

Our Founding Fathers would be disgusted and ashamed.
