LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
Address greed, not overpopulation
Saturday, May 10, 2008 | 2:03 a.m.
It isn’t overpopulation that has destroyed our environment, and is continuing to make our planet almost uninhabitable, it is greed. Greed that causes manufacturers to dump hazardous waste into public waterways, rather than dispose of it properly. Greed that allows Exxon Mobil to see $40 billion profit in 2006, while middle America suffers through steadily rising gas prices. Greed that puts 40 percent of the world’s total net worth into the hands of 1 percent of the world’s population.
For those who would like to see the world’s population reduced, I’d ask them with whom should we start? Themselves? Their family? Their loved ones? It’s a pretty big planet, and there are plenty of natural resources available for everyone, if those with the control over those resources would only care more about other human beings and less about lining their already bursting pockets.
