Overcome with the power of the green movement

Thursday, May 8, 2008 | 2 a.m.

I am overcome with the unstoppable power of the green movement, converting a coal- and gas-loving utility into a promoter of renewables. You’ve probably seen those ads for Nevada Power with those per capita stats that show it is a leader in using alternative power sources. Now the company’s parent, Sierra Pacific, is joining with enviros who love to hector the utility in lobbying Congress for a renewable tax credit bill. Isn’t it beautiful when the profit motive dovetails with the correct policy choice? “Extending these tax credits will help make renewable energy more affordable, ultimately benefiting Nevada families,” said Sierra CEO Michael Yackira in a company news release. Now that is, well, powerful.
