Chancellor Rogers’ TV station urges Gibbons to call it quits
Tue, Jun 24, 2008 (2 a.m.)
Carson City A Las Vegas TV station owned by higher education Chancellor Jim Rogers called Monday for Gov. Jim Gibbons to resign for the good of the state.
The KVBC Channel 3 editorial said Gibbons is failing Nevada by opposing any tax increase to address critical needs.
“You cannot be taught judgment,” said the editorial, delivered by Rogers’ son Perry, editorial chairman of his father’s Sunbelt Communications. “There is no hope for you to learn that at this point in your life. But you can do the honorable thing and step aside.”
Jim Rogers has been sharply critical of Gibbons for proposing cuts in education to balance the state budget, which has already been cut by $914 million and is still $250 million short on revenue. But the elder Rogers said he had nothing to do with the editorial. He said his son operates independently and “doesn’t call me for approval.”
He said that when Perry Rogers mentioned he was going to call for Gibbons to resign, “I said, ‘It’s up to you.’ ”
Ben Kieckhefer, the governor’s spokesman, said Gibbons would not resign or budge from his stance against raising taxes.
Kieckhefer pointed out that neither party’s legislative leadership is calling for higher taxes right now. “Is he calling for their resignations, too?” Kieckhefer said.

KVBC Channel 3 has never ever broadcast a negative story about Rogers and there is ton of material to do so.
Great standards of journalism they follow at KVBC Channel 3.
How about a recall if he will not step down?
Why is Perry Roger's editorial not run in Southern Nevada? A majority of Nevadan's, probably an easy 80% want Gibbons to step down. I have sent correspondence to the capital to Gibbons asking him to resign and I bet I am not the only one. Only an arrogant idiot would continue as he is.
Gibbons is doing a great job.
He ran on not raising taxes and he is fulfilling that pledge.
What, pray tell, is he doing a good job at? Seriously. What good has he done? Besides not raising taxes.
Hello? Anyone?
First of all there is no "Sunbelt Editorial Board" It is only Perry himself speaking his own private opinions on Daddy's TV stations. He is a Board of one who makes employees of KVBC work on his projects away from their regular duties and often on their days off, unpaid. Just like Dad. Everyone at KVBC knows this.
Also, he has not created new programs just for ego and the need to have an "legacy" like RHINO Quinn did.
Until this most recent editorial, the Sunbelt brain trust had been sticking to the tradition of offering editorials that were nothing more than a string of platitudes. Now they're going way out on a limb...calling for something that most rational citizens have been calling for for months...Gibbo's resignation.
I'm going to try to give Perry Rogers the benefit of the doubt and consider him well intentioned...but that doesn't mean he isn't completely insulated by his wealth. Let's face it, his perspective on quality of life issues is based on such real life problems as the cost of fuel for the private jet.
Sadly, the seemingly only option to Perry's editorials are those of Ms. Peckman, a self-appointed know-it-all of the nth degree.
Viewers need to remember that media ownership isn't some kind of cannonization to sainthood. it's just a business, and consequently is operated for one primary purpose...profit. It's okay to make money...just don't do it under the pretext of bettering our quality of life...that's completely disingenuous.
This story is not news.
Woooweee.....the channel that is owned by Rogers is against Gibbons.
If the channel called for Rogers to resign then boy that would that be news!!!!!
"Also, he has not created new programs just for ego and the need to have an "legacy" like RHINO Quinn did."
Let me bust out the red ink pen again.
I can only assume you're talking about GUINN. I'm unaware of a previous state Governor named Quinn. Or maybe you mean Illinois Lt. Governor Pat Quinn?
RHINO, actually should be RINO, an acronym that stands for "Republican In Name Only." Unless you're asserting that he was a quadraped with a horn.
And no new pet projects from Gibbers, the love gov? Wrong. What about his failed empowerment schools scheme?
theBS thanks again.
It is "quadruped" not "quadraped" .
Who is your hero in office right now? I bet it is nobody that is in a state or federal legislative bodies.
You do not have guts to pick one of them. It is probably somebody that does not have policy making power, like a janitor.
According to your standard, if they do not bat 100% then they are a total failure.
So, I am guessing it is nobody.
You know, if folks like Perry Rogers and Geoff Schumacher want to volunteer more of their money to the state so they can flush it down the rathole paying for kindergarten (de facto orphanages) for the children of illegals far be it from me to stop them.
Or, if they want to donate it to the university system so it can maintain its ballroom dancing program, I'll not stand in their way.
I don't like Gibbons (sounds like a type of primate) any more than the next guy, but I didn't vote for him either. If having this nincowpoop in office for another three years means no $1 billion dollar tax increase like we had with our last Gubner, then so be it.
Two quotes to remember: 1) Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it; and 2) Be thankful you're not getting all the government you pay for.
Perry, stick to gravy-training off Andre, you're much better at it.
KVBC Channel 3 looked so silly doing that editorial.
It proves that they have absolutely no independence from Rogers. He says jump and they say how high.
Quadruped. Touche.
Nance, politicians are all amoral egomaniacs, on both sides of the aisle. It's always a choice of the least corrupt and those more likely to uphold my values. I don't harbor the illusion that a perfect politician exists, and thus don't name a political "hero."
I admire Catherine Cortez-Masto and Kate Marshall. Masto will make a great governor some day. I can even tolerate a few Republicans.
And my standards aren't high, I just refuse to abide incompetence or people who make excuses for incompetence. It's the trait that Bush and Gibbons share, and thus explains my contempt for both.
If anything, maybe you should raise your standards a bit.
Take for example, Bob Beers. If you weren't so busy on Beers' blog posting links to loony tunes Obama conspiracy websites, you might realize that Bob's brilliant tax rebate debacle of a few years back precipitated today's budget woes. Yes, the foolproof (foolish?) economic plan of a CPA is why the Legislature is meeting on Friday to slash the budget.
Had Beers done the fiscally sane thing and kept the money stuffed away and collecting compound interest in the rainy day fund, we wouldn't have had to cut nearly as much as we have. I just couldn't believe that a CPA was so adverse to a savings account. Seems like a rational thing to me, and my it would've been handy.
And the next time I see Beers on TV, decrying our heavily overpaid public employees, I'd like the news wonk to ask Bob what his wife does for a living. Sources tell me she's a public employee...
At first Catherine Cortez-Masto seemed to be on track to be a good attorney general for the state of Nevada. But then the Democratic Party started to complain that she was not acting in the best interest of the party. They said she was not active enough in their causes.
So she agreed with the Democratic scheme to trigger a challenge to the term limits law this election cycle and not the next election cycle. They unloaded that plan at last minute in the primary registration process which I think was a horrible sin against the voters and extremely unprofessional.
They need to shoot as many bullets at the term limits state constitutional amendment in this election cycle. If Democrats lose this battle now then they can reload and prepare for the next election cycle by both preparing new candidates and also scheming to over throwing the constitutional amendment.
Too bad, she seemed so professional. Now, she is another political hack for the Democratic Party.

As for Kate Marshall, other than causing a stir about the former Republican treasury and giving the same “I hate Gibbons” speech dribble that all Democrats give, I have not seen much from her.
Neither of these are truly policy makers. They are more administrators. Too bad, you did not pick somebody that has to stand for something in public. Neither has shown any leadership. As a Democratic, automatically they should already demanded large tax increases, but not one word from either of them on that subject.
Where is the leadership in the Democratic Party?
Perhaps, we should look under some rocks.
Uh, oh! You got me there!
Except, you didn't.
But really, a general question: did you actually type the same four paragraphs twice? Are you ok? Are the intellectual rigors of commenting on the Sun's website too much for you to handle? Do you normally repeat yourself, verbatim?
I'm worried for you, Nance.
I make no excuses for Masto. She can defend herself.
I too want Gibbons to resign and move to North Dakota however North Dakota wouldn't take him in
GIBBONS OUT, NOW!!!
