LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
Polygamy an affront to human decency
Saturday, July 26, 2008 | 2:02 a.m.
Ever gotten a good look at the women and kids in these polygamy places? They look beaten down and they look like they’ve been brainwashed, as if it’s a good idea for these women to be made subservient to a man who is married to any number of other women.
It’s not about religion — no, it’s about human decency. These people aren’t being treated fairly as humans, no matter what they’ve been made to believe.
So if Sen. Harry Reid is saying he’s going to try to break up these groups and the bad things they do, I sure hope he’s serious about it. The women certainly look as if they’ve gone through quite a lot already, so if someone’s going to step in and do something about it, let’s get it right and give them a second chance at a good life.

Yes, it's the same look from all of those who are brain-washed into the "cult".
What a pity that young girls are taught, from little on, that their purpose in life is to be 'one of many' and to just procreate, procreate, procreate. If these young girls had half a chance they would soon come to learn that there is more to their existence than being some sexual child bearing object for these perverts/pedophiles. If it's all about religion then explain if you will why each 'wife' continues to get younger and younger. These men are pedophiles in religious garb - (wolves in sheeps clothing) and need to be called out on their abominable behavior.
Poligamy among consenting, informed adults isn't really a bad thing! When minor children are forced to marry 68 year-old men or being coerced in any regard = THEN, it's a crime against the childhood and innocence of the child and should be prosecuted to the law's extent.
Instead of this child-trafficker putz pimp criminal
Warren Jeffs, think of that HBO Series "Big Love". Mature, informed adults leading their "family" in their lives and not harming anyone in or out of their "family".
Who the hell is this Harrison person anyway to judge how much or not another family is or isn't living according to HIS/HER standards, eh? This person's letter is loaded with personal biases and projections as to THEIR happinesses and THEIR living THEIR lives.
IF someone can support and provide for multiple spouses, whether male OR female and do right by them, who are you to judge?
IMO, this is kind of a variation of the gay marriage discrimination argument. As long as the family is not breaking the law - in this case by trafficking in underage children or beating / abusing the family which are common, acknowledged crimes = who are you to judge?
If I could financially support that and do as right by that as I try to do in my own marriage, I wouldn't mind having several "wives" if they would have me. But "Wife #1" would kill me long before that happened anyway..........
Dammmm........
If you want to know the inside story of the polygamous cult lead by Warren Jeffs (who live at the YFZ Ranch in TX and in Colorado City, AZ.), check out the recent documentary BANKING ON HEAVEN. http://www.bankingonheaven.com
Many Muslim extremists practice polygamy, too. Also, some of them exercise their legal right to end the lives of their wives and children if they dishonor the family.
We should not say "Polygamy an affront to human decency” for it will offend our Muslim friends.
'Consenting adults'?? How in the hell does a woman make an informed decision to become a part of a polygamous lifestyle when she's been brainwashed since childhood to believe this is a 'good' thing. Good for who? the men, of course. I want to tell these women to 'wise up' but they really can't be blamed for being so subjective to the male populace - it's the way they were raised and they believe it's the way it's supposed to be - how sad.
Polygamy itself is not the problem. The problem is women and children being forced to live a lifestyle that is unhealthy and unsafe.
If consenting adults choose to have multiple sexual partners and live together, fine.
When this involves isolating children from society and forcing young girls to have sex with old men - this crosses the line. We have a duty as a society to protect the young who cannot defend themselves.
Why is it so hard to believe that educated, intelligent women might CHOOSE polygamy? It's a valid relationship choice, and in a society that accepts serial monogamy, I don't see how people can criticize people who have commited (albiet larger) families.
As a secular polygamist, I'm horrified at this witchhunt. Yes, the FLDS women may be choosing plural marriage because of their religious beliefs, but they aren't inherently bad choices. It works for them.
The specific cases of abuse are the same kind of abuse that happens in homes all over America, amoung all religions and socio-economic classes.
Sexual abuse is a crime, and there are vicitms everywhere. Polygamy is a seperate issue, and is a victimless "crime."

When these young girls are brought up in this lifestyle from birth on upwards there is no chance to make an 'educated, informed' decision because their sensabilities have been compromised. And to NVMakz, since when do any of the WOMEN take on Multiple HUSBANDS - is this something new that no one but you has heard about? There is no way to make a silk purse out of a sows ear - the women truly believe it's what they want -it's not their fault they can't think straight - they're brainwashed - and the men, I still contend, are nothing but pedophiles using their religion to condone their deviancy.
