Letter to the editor:

Gore’s solutions are totally impractical

Thu, Jul 24, 2008 (2:02 a.m.)

Ten years to independence?

According to the god of the far left — Al Gore — America must commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from cheap, clean renewable energy sources, including solar and wind, within 10 years.

It’s a nice sentiment but, like most people, Mr. Gore doesn’t have a clue about:

(A) How to do it without ruining the U.S. economy, and

(B) How to get it done without all the tree-huggers getting in the way!

How many examples does Mr. Gore need?

California won’t allow transmission lines from a wind farm to where energy is needed, the Kennedys don’t want a wind farm off the coast of Hyannis Port because it would ruin their views, and solar panels on 140 acres of government land will supply only 33 percent of the electricity required by Nellis Air Force Base!

How many acres of panels would it take to run a city the size of, say, Boulder City? Nevermind Las Vegas!

The technologies are not the problem — oil, gas, coal, nuclear, solar, hydro, geothermal, etc. — they are the solutions, singularly and in combination.

The problem is people who insist their way is the only solution — and that no other way should even be considered, and that only idiots would try!

Well, Mr. Gore may have a few statues in his back pocket, but the one thing he is obviously lacking is common sense.

  1. Right on, Mr. D'Amore!!

I'm shocked the Socialist Sun published a letter-of-truth like this.

Gore is among the largest frauds of this age. His own energy-gobbling lifestyle is a direct refutation of his preaching.

As long as the liberal only argues alternatives and efforts withering and attacking oil and its economic and financial transitions to the future, the "tree-hugger" will ALWAYS be in the wrong.

NOT being all we can be IS the argument of the Reids, Pelosis, Gores and "bs-ers" who think unproven and not-ready-for-prime-time "alternatives are the answer".

    These "one-sided lead-helmet liberals"(mq) are destructively delusional.

En-viral-MENTALISM is a political movement of social communism and the degrading of free, capitalist nations, not one of saving our environment and so forth.

  2. Mr. Amore - the American economy is pretty much ruined already so let's not try to blame THAT one on Gore too, ok?

  3. It's that kind of lack of will that will destroy us in the coming years. We need to be innovators and not followers. Continuing to rely on oil will destroy us financially and physically.

  4. Mr. D'Amore,

What will happen to the American economy if we don't get ourselves free of dependence on oil? When is the cost of freeing ourselves from oil ever going to be lower than it is now? What is to be gained by delaying this effort?

"The problem is people who insist their way is the only solution — and that no other way should even be considered, and that only idiots would try!"

You mean like you're saying about Al Gore's proposal?

"How many acres of panels would it take to run a city the size of, say, Boulder City? Nevermind Las Vegas!"

It would take an array of solar panels in a square about 11 miles on each side (about 120 square miles) to replace the entire generating capacity of Nevada Power. Or four generating stations six miles by five. Or ten three miles by four. Or solar panels on the roof of every building in Las Vegas (plus some more). You get the idea.

    What are we waiting for?

  5. Michael,

There are so many people attacking Al Gore about his lifestyle, I think those who do attack him are only jealous, that he has a few cars, a big house, can afford to heat and cool it for god knows how much each year, no you are the one who lacks common sense.

Another posting says just what is the truth, the USA economy is in a shambles, and has nothing to do with Gore.

Al Gores suggestion that within 10 yrs time the USA should have rid its self of fossil fuels, perhaps not within 10 yrs, but the opportunities are there to at least give it a try. The USA have for the past 15 yrs been talking and looking at the problems, thinking about them rejecting proposals, you name it and the administration have not done it. So many of the present day politicians will be long dead and buried, and their own grandchildren will be in a world riddled by wars, conflicts, etc, but not about oil, this time it will be water and food. Mass movement of 100s of millions of people from countries close to the equator will be travelling northwards in the search for water and food. SE Asia and China will be without drinking water as the glaciers and snowfields melt in the Himalayas. This is not science fiction, although many of you will just shrug this off as scare mongering.

  6. Al Gore is worth over $100 million.

Al Gore house uses over 12 times more energy than a regular house.

Last year he "greened" his house and now it even uses more than 10% energy than the previous year...LOL.

He owns a big guzzling boat.

He flys around in a private jet.

Hmmmmmmmm..perhaps there are a lot of suckers in the world.

His plan is so crazy that nobody will attempt it.

Obama energy has no plan to get rid of fossils fuels ever.....why? Because it is crazy to do so.

We do not have the technology or the financial means to pull that off yet. Perhaps we keep doing R & D then one day some magic car or energy solution will pop up. It does not exist at this point in time.

  7. Some magic car???
Didn't we have an electric vehicle that worked, but the industry blocked it? As in Who Killed the Electric Car?
We have a lot of the pieces in place, we just need to apply ourselves. If we could come from behind to win the space race and do so in ten years, why can't we apply ourselves to this problem. This is our generation's defining moment. We can either rise to the occassion or dither some more.

  8. Mr. Nance,

Your stance seems to be that we shouldn't pursue alternative energy sources because Al Gore is a hypocrite. It's called an ad hominem attack.

It doesn't matter one bit how much hypocrisy is evidenced in Al Gore's behavior. The problem is our dependence on oil and its continued impact on our economy and our national security. Let's stay focused.

  9. Jfnance32
The technology IS there to get rid of fossil fuels for Energy production, and the USA has the financial means to make it happen. The only problem here is that the USA does not want to get rid of fossil fuels, as it will affect the economy of the USA, what a load of C trap.

  10. There is no such technology.

Solar and wind are not a 24/7 system and there is no cost effective storage system to make them into a 24/7 provider of energy.

Repeat...there is no technology that is cost effective to make solar and wind 24/7 generators of energy.

    Key word: Cost Effective

Also, there is not a cost effective replacement for oil based transportion either.

Again the key word is...cost effective.

If you want to talk about reducing reliance on fossil fuels then that is another story.

  11. Dear John F: Sorry the actions of Mr. Gore demonstrates that "do as I say, but not as I do". Which really means, that he is doing this simply for political purposes and does not truly believe this tripe he states. You are right however that we need to focus, and that is, to drill and research alterative sources of energy.

As to the statements above about the economy: The economy is sputtering along. The last reading was that it only grew at a 1%. No economy can maintain growth indefinitely. That is not possible. Wake up. BTW: I lived through the Carter recession, this is a "cake walk" compared to that.

  12. Uddeboda, the USA does not want to get rid of Fossil Fuels because it will affect the pockets of those who shall remain unnamed....
