McCain’s book shows he’s qualified to lead
Tue, Jul 8, 2008 (2:04 a.m.)
I have just finished reading “Faith of My Fathers” by John McCain. I heartily recommend this book to everyone.
Though I agree with those who say being a prisoner of war, by itself, does not qualify McCain to be president, many of the qualities he showed in his imprisonment do.
He is unquestionably loyal, sincere, dedicated, truthful, honorable and, in every respect, a true patriot.
To those who say that McCain is a clone of George W. Bush and that electing him would mean four more years of Bush’s policies, I say you don’t know the man. He is every bit his own man.
True, he has more often than not agreed with Bush and followed much of his thinking. But if you doubt he is his own man, read the book. It was written and published long before he started campaigning for the office.

Perhaps true, but as you said, he has more often than not agreed with Bush. That, too, is still of concern and cannot be ignored.

Mr. Gillette,
That's the problem. The book is a reflection of McCain as he was, not as he is.
The McCain that was was far the better of the two.
John McCain has had a long history of standing up to the powers that be in Washington. Unfortunately, in seeking the nomination of his party in 2008, he's turned his back on his own ideals.
McCain's campaign excuses his lack of courage as evolving policy positions. We know better. McCain's positions have "evolved" on a litany of issues including the offshore drilling moratorium, windfall-profit tax, his own immigration legislation, his own campaign finance legislation, warrantless wiretapping, privatizing Social Security, protecting abortion rights in cases of rape and incest, the estate tax, indefinite detention of terror suspects, normalizing relations with Cuba, diplomacy with Hamas, diplomacy with Syria, waterboarding, the DREAM act, Roe v. Wade, gay marriage, Bush's tax cuts, ethanol, and the Confederate flag.
It's unfortunate that such a great man has abandoned his convictions in seeking a higher office.
Please don't vote for McCain. Please don't be swayed by a book he wrote himself. Any politician who writes about himself is going to say what people want to hear, and make himself look good. Please look at the statistics for where money has been going in this country. The middle class is being destroyed to create an aristocracy, and McCain has made it clear he wants to continue those policies. Look at the jump in CEO salaries, from roughly 30x that of the average worker, to roughly 300x or more. Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats have shown good enough leadership. It is time for some new blood that has not been living for decades in beltway privilege. Please read the politico.com story about the McCain's many houses and other spending. We do not need another born-and-bred aristocrat for president.
