With the general election approaching in November, organizers expect this year’s Damboree Parade to draw as many campaigners as water balloons.

Local officials and those vying for state office will float down Nevada Way during the 60th annual Fourth of July procession.

For ambitious patriots, it could be a 15-hour nonstop Independence Day, kicking off with a 7 a.m. Rotary Pancake Breakfast at Bicentennial Park and concluding with 9 p.m. fireworks at Veterans Memorial Park.

Beginning at 9 a.m., 115 floats will parade down Nevada Way to Fifth Street down to Broadbent Memorial Park at Fifth and Avenue B, Patty Sullivan, recreation program coordinator, said.

The last 20 or so are the wet floats — the water route begins at Fifth and Aztec Place, heading east to Avenue B and south to Sixth Street.

Six past and present mayors will lead the way on the Grand Marshal Float — Mayors Roger Tobler, Bob Ferraro, Rep. Jon Porter, Eric Lundgaard, Iris Bletsch and Heber Tobler, Sullivan said.

Dina Titus, Porter’s chief Democratic rival for a seat in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District, will follow the mayors on a float, Sullivan said.

In addition, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto, State Assemblyman Joe Hardy and County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury plan to ride in the parade.

Sullivan advised fireworks spectators to arrive by 8 p.m. to secure parking spaces.

This year, additional parking will be available toward the fields, though it’s a few minutes’ hike to the grassy fireworks-watching areas, she said.
