Next president will need help from Congress

Friday, Jan. 11, 2008 | 2 a.m.

Perhaps this is putting the cart before the horse, but the presidential hopefuls and their high rhetoric from either political party will not be able to fulfill their agendas if the next president’s party doesn’t have control of Congress.

Case in point among many was Bill Clinton’s stymied progressive second term halted by the Republican majority in Congress. Another is happening now to the Democrats, who do not have enough votes to stop George W. Bush from using the presidential veto.

If anything is going to be accomplished in the next administration, whether it is led by a Democratic or a Republican president, Congress must have enough votes to control the veto pen.

If not, the lofty goals espoused by contenders to the presidency will be all talk, no action, and the continuation of political deadlock.

  1. Bill Clinton's second term was stymied by Bill Clinton's moral problems, illegal activities, and anger-proned attitude. Bill and Hillary are the personification of divisiveness. We need fresh, real leadership, the kind that Obama has exhibited.
