Letter:
Caucuses, primaries further democracy
Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008 | 2 a.m.
Neva Herr’s Wednesday letter “What’s the point of primaries, caucuses?” has raised questions about our political process that deserve answers.
- Unlike primaries, precinct caucuses bring neighbors together to discuss issues, support candidates and directly elect county caucus delegates. Especially in Las Vegas, where most of us didn’t attend school together, the process helps build community.
- We Nevadans like making our own choices. Ms. Herr may be unaware that our Jan. 19 caucuses are organized and conducted by the political parties, not the state election board. Tax dollars are not involved.
- Winning in Iowa gives a campaign momentum, earning endorsements, volunteers and contributions for elections to follow. Losing there can mean the end, as can losing in New Hampshire, Nevada, South Carolina or on Super Tuesday en route to the national convention and the November election. Only the strongest survive to become president.
- Holding all the elections on one day would greatly favor the wealthiest candidates. As it is, candidates can concentrate their resources on the early contests. Those who do poorly needn’t campaign in states they can’t win. Those who do well gain the support they need to carry on.
Regarding the possibility of opening election centers from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., who would staff and pay for them? I happen to be a Democrat, but I know in both parties those of us who have volunteered to be trained and lead the caucuses do so at our own expense. We believe in our candidates, the process, and the opportunity to exercise our right to choose. Democracy requires participation. Find a way to attend your caucus and let your choice be counted.
