What’s the point of primaries, caucuses?

Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008 | 2 a.m.

As we get set for Nevada’s presidential caucus, I have a few thoughts about the whole thing.

  1. Who came up with this musical chairs system? Sitting in groups according to whom we might vote for sounds like something out of kindergarten, minus the punch and cookies. (Oh wait, we outlawed those from schools.)
  2. If Iowa and New Hampshire are so important, why do the rest of the states bother having a presidential caucus or primary? Think of the money we could save.
  3. If Iowa is so important for a candidate to win, why have so few winners become president?
  4. Finally, why don’t we just have a primary election this early in each state? We could set up election centers that are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. so those of us who have jobs that we have to go to every day could be part of this “democratic process.”
