Annual Christmas tree recycling program kicks off Dec. 26

Where to go

Henderson residents may bring trees to five locations: Acacia Park, 50 Casa Del Fuego St.; Anthem Hills Park, 2256 N. Reunion Drive; Mission Hills Park, 551 E. Mission Drive; Pecos Legacy Park, 150 Pecos Road; or Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive. For more information, call 267-4000.

Henderson officials are hoping to collect more than 2,500 Christmas trees to recycle during the annual collection program, Dec. 26 and through Jan. 14.

"When you think about the number of trees thrown to the curb after every holiday, quite a few just go to the landfill," Henderson spokeswoman Kim Becker said. "Because the tree is organic material, there is a better way of disposing them."

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department turns the trees into mulch using a chipper, often on-site at parks. The mulch is used for city landscaping, Becker said.

"It's mulch we wouldn't otherwise have for these projects," she said. "What's really great about it is it is no cost for residents, and people feel like they're doing a good thing."

Last year, Henderson recycled 2,062 trees, compared with 1,310 in 2006 and 752 in 2005.

"It seems like residents have embraced the program with increased participation each year," Becker said.

Trees must be stripped of ornaments, tinsel and lights, which can damage the chippers and contaminate the mulch. Trees with any sprays cannot be accepted.
