Rain possible today with gusty winds

A winter storm is dipping into Southern Nevada today, but unlike last week's rare blast of winter, there's no snow attached to this one.

Any precipitation today will fall in the form of rain with highs in the low 50s in the Las Vegas Valley. The National Weather Service said the city has a 30 percent chance of picking up rain today.

Sustained winds near 15 mph this afternoon could gust as high as 26 mph, forecasters said.

Although snow will stay away from Las Vegas, it could make a return today to higher elevations surrounding the city.

Forecasters issued a winter weather advisory in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today for Lincoln County, with up to 5 inches of snow possible at elevations higher than 4,000 feet. Snow also is likely around Mount Charleston and the Sheep Mountains.

The low temperature tonight will drop to about 37 degrees in Las Vegas. The high Tuesday through Christmas Day will top out near 50 degrees with slight chances of rain each day.

The average high temperature on today's date at McCarran International Airport is 56 degrees, according to weather service records.
