Governor’s renewable energy panel releases plan

Gov. Jim Gibbons' commission on renewable energy projects released its plan for building power transmission lines, a key part of expanding solar, wind and geothermal projects in the state.

Gibbons at the meeting on Tuesday declared Nevada a year ahead in the race for renewable energies compared to other states. In an interview after the meeting, Gibbons said funding transmission lines is his "highest priority" for any federal infrastructure money.

Gibbons has made putting Nevada on a path to energy independence a top priority. Eighteen months ago, he formed the Renewable Energy Transmission Access Advisory Committee (RETAAC). Last year, it identified areas in the state that would produce wind, solar and geothermal power. Tuesday's announcement was how to connect those power sources -- most of which are in rural Nevada -- to the electric grid.

Gibbons said eventually he wanted Nevada to export power to other states.
