Sun City Summerlin fire station vote extended

The deadline for residents to approve a new fire station in Sun City Summerlin has been extended by two months due to low voter participation. Ballots for the proposal, which calls for a new city of Las Vegas Fire and Rescue station at the northeast corner of Del Webb Boulevard and Sundial Drive, were mailed to each homeowner in Sun City Summerlin at the end of October.

Approximately 4,400 ballots have been received so far, but community leaders want that total to reach 6,000 before they begins tallying the results, said Richard Post, president of the Sun City Summerlin Community Association Board of Directors.

At its Monday meeting, the Association's board of directors voted 7-0 to extend the deadline to Feb. 18. During that time, the Association plans to mail a reminder and another ballot to each homeowner who has not yet voted, said board member Dave Steinman.

"If we just send a reminder by itself without a ballot that won't help very much," Steinman said.

Out 7,781 homeowners in Sun City Summerlin, 5,214 affirmative votes — which equals two-thirds of all ballots — are needed before the project can move forward.

The 7,000 square-foot facility would house one fire truck and one rescue ambulance at what is presently the ninth tee at Palm Valley Golf Course. The tee would be moved slightly to the east, Steinman said, adjacent to the new building. Construction and maintenance of the building would be handled by the city of Las Vegas.

Sun City Summerlin resident BJ Martens said she hopes more people cast their vote.

"If it loses because people voted against it, then it loses legitimately," Martens said. "But if it loses because not enough people voted, that will be terribly sad."

Ballots for the fire station vote are being collected at the Mountain Shadows Community Center at 9107 Del Webb Blvd. Ballots can either be sent in the mail or dropped off in-person.

The Sun City Summerlin Community Association will also hold an election in February for four open seats on the Association's 2009 Board of Directors.

Each term is for two years and seven candidates have submitted their names — Allen Baer, Ken Caroccia, Orin "Bud" Cook, Marilyn LeVasseur, Joseph O'Connell, Ray Troik and Debra Waggoner. Baer, Caroccia and LeVasseur are current board members running for re-election.

Ballots will be mailed to each homeowner in Sun City Summerlin during the last week of January with the community's "Link" magazine and the deadline to vote is Feb. 26.

The Association's election committee is also in urgent need of additional volunteers to help with the election process. Residents of Sun City Summerlin who are interested in volunteering are encouraged to call Lorin Martin at 966-1408 for more information.
