Rangers to show off Lake Mead Recreation Area with open house

More information

The Lake Mead National Recreation Area is hosting an open house Saturday with refreshments and ranger-led talks aimed at displaying the park's amenities and history.

Activities will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Visitor Center, U.S. 93 and North Shore Road.

"It's informational for people in the area to get to know what is available at Lake Mead," Lake Mead spokesman Andrew Muñoz said. "We want families to come out to our Visitors Center and learn about the different hiking trails that we have."

The Visitors Center will have additional interpretive staff speaking about the park and its wildlife. They will also lead walks through the Cactus Garden — an exhibit of the different varieties of Mojave Desert cacti.

Park rangers also will lead two hikes that weekend. One on Saturday will venture to Tombstone Rock — a moderate 7-mile trek offering views of the lake and Las Vegas. The other on Sunday will travel 1.5 miles to a bluff overlooking Las Vegas Wash with bird- and small-animal viewing opportunities. Reservations are required.
