Neighbors unhappy about possible tavern in Eastern Ave. strip mall

A business owner who would like to open a tavern in a recently constructed strip mall on Windmill Parkway near Eastern Avenue has been granted more time from Clark County to address neighbors' concerns before the county decides whether to allow the bar.

The request, which was scheduled to be heard at the Clark County Planning Commission meeting yesterday, will now be considered by the county Jan. 6.

Peggy Pound, who represented the applicant for the tavern, strip mall owner Windmill Market LLC, said her client is in negotiations with Dotty's, the mini-casino known for a home-style gaming area, as a possible occupant of the suite should the county approve the request.

Concerns about the nearness of the proposed tavern to the backyards of homes that abut the property, which is on the north side of Windmill Parkway just east of Eastern Avenue, were aired during a Paradise Town Advisory Board meeting last Tuesday.

Neighbor Shannon Huslig said she was unhappy about the smoking and drinking that would be taking place only 55 feet from her backyard.

"People don't want alcohol around their homes, period," she said.

Neighbor Alex Sadeghi said he has concerns that people could jump into his backyard from the property.

"I have a 2-year-old who is constantly playing in the backyard," he said.

Pound said prior to the hearing of the request by the county she mailed notifications to all of the homes in the neighboring area and held three neighborhood meetings that yielded compromises and eventually approval from all neighbors in attendance.

She said each meeting was attended by between roughly 14 and 40 people.

Having made the concessions that the proposed tavern would have no live music or outside dining, Pound said she was blindsided by the concerns aired at the Paradise meeting.

She said she plans to spend the next month going door to door to individually discuss the concerns of each neighbor nearing the property. In the meantime, she said her client is addressing an issue of noncompliance with county codes that pertain to wall height and landscaping on the property.

Height is being added to the wall, she said, and the number of trees is also being doubled.

Businesses that are planned for other suites on the property include a Dunkin' Donuts, an Italian restaurant, a skin care clinic, a cigar store and an antique reproduction furniture store, Pound said.
