Letter to the editor:

Speak out against Afghan escalation

Friday, Aug. 22, 2008 | 2:03 a.m.

From an old-timer to all Barack Obama supporters, particularly the young, and to all others:

Please urge your candidate not to support another stupid war in Afghanistan.

Please save your young lives and limbs — and our economy.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the next president declared a war there — or elsewhere — and nobody came?

  1. Hang on there a minute, pal. As an Obama supporter I'm here to tell you that I wholeheartedly agree with Obama that Afghanistan needs more of our attention, not less. Further, I also supported President Bush when he delivered his ultimatum to the Taliban government in 2001.

In case you've forgotten, the terrorists responsible for the attacks of September 11th trained in Afghanistan and were supported by the Afghan government. We were justified in invading and are justified in staying there until the last of al Qaeda is destroyed. I and other Obama supporters will speak out against our continued presence in Afghanistan when Afghanistan no longer serves as a haven for bin Laden and his filthy ilk.

  2. From a young-timer Barack Obama supporter to an old-timer, I have to absolutely disagree.

Barack Obama has spoken out about our need to go after al quaida in Afghanistan and Northern Pakistan for years now.

Unfortunately, the Bush administration has failed in it's war in Afghanistan. The eastern edge of the country is still ruled by warlords and tribes. This could turn into a fertile training ground for al quaida or other terrorist groups to recuperate and train for more attacks. This is something we cannot allow, and I am glad Barack Obama has led the charge to correct Bush's mistakes.

The optional war was Iraq, and we have seen the Iraq war's toll on our economy and our young men and women who died for an optional war. It is a shame that Bush overlooked the real threat for his percieved threat.

  3. Why is is that some people would rather live under the yoke of a dictator or terrorists than stand up and defend our children?

Maybe we should have ran away at Bunker Hill, or Fort McHenry, or Omaha Beach or Hue.

Would it be better of your neighborhood religious committee elected to cut your daughters head off because she forgot to wear her head covering?

Don't be a pinhead...standup against all that is evil in the world. With three South East Asia combat tours, I know I did.

I could never support Obama's views but I do agree with him on this point.

  4. Obama wants to do a surge in Afghanistan because he saw it worked so well in Iraq.

Obama also wants do attacks on sovereign Pakistani soil without Pakistan permission.

Obama wants to keep troops in Iraq. His key advisor has recommended to keep over 80,000 troops in Iraq.

  5. There goes Nance again, spewing statements that have nothing to do with the facts.

Obama supported increasing our troop levels in Afghanistan long before the "surge" in Iraq began.

Obama also wants to go after terrorists wherever they may be. If that means invading the sovereign territory of governments that are harboring those people, so be it.

Mr. Nance would have us refrain from chasing down Osama bin Laden because he's hiding in Pakistan, yet he supported the invasion of Iraq in part because there were - supposedly - terrorists there. We didn't have Iraq's approval to invade. Why is Mr. Nance suddenly so concerned about Pakistani sensibilities?

Finally, Obama sees the necessity for keeping troops in Iraq. That doesn't mean he wants to do it. If Obama had had his way, they never would have gone there in the first place.

  6. "Obama supported increasing our troop levels in Afghanistan long before the "surge" in Iraq began."

Obama had plenty of opportunities to hold meetings in the sub-committee on Afghanistan. His sub-committe is suppose to oversee NATO and NATO is running the military operations in Afghanistan. Obama did not think it was important to do so.

Also, Obama had an opportunity to visit Afghanistan before this election year. He was with a group of Senators who in their itinerary went to Afghanistan. When it came to that part of the trip, Obama skipped it and went to Jordan.

I guess before this election year year, Obama did not care much about Afganistan.

As for attacking sovereign countries.....wow...usually Democrats scream "Impeachable offense...Impeachable offense"....I am glad you guys are growing up.

I am also glad that Obama and Democrats are getting wise to the need of keeping some troops in Iraq.
