Iowa meatpacking plant cited for safety violations

Fri, Aug 22, 2008 (8:42 a.m.)

Iowa labor officials are citing meatpacking plant Agriprocessors with 31 new and repeat safety violations.

The Iowa Division of Labor Services on Friday proposed fining the Postville plant $101,000 for 29 serious violations and six repeat offenses.

Earlier this month, Agriprocessors _ the nation's largest kosher meatpacking plant _ was accused by the Iowa Division of Labor Services of employing dozens of underage workers. In May, the plant was the target of the largest single-site immigration enforcement raid in U.S. history, with nearly 400 people arrested on immigration charges.

Agriprocessors has 15 days to respond to the state's allegations.
