Incumbents not thrilled to debate

Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008 | 2 a.m.

Most of the time incumbents aren’t too thrilled to debate their challengers. Gives them credibility. Provides an opportunity for a gaffe. No good can come out of it. And yet state Sen. Bob Beers, the day after the primary election, sent out a release challenging his Democratic opponent, Allison Copening, to a series of debates. What would motivate Beers to employ such an upside-down campaign tactic? Is he crazy, cocky or maybe both? Beers, who loves to debate in person, online and on TV, must believe he will crush the untested Copening. And he also knows that Copening can hardly turn him down because she can’t have any legitimate excuse for doing so. We’ll give the untested Copening her first test tonight on “Face to Face.” I bet Beers will be watching.

  1. Jon-

Last night's Face to Face with Allison Copening was a gem! It takes a lot of chutzpah for someone to sit across from you with absolutely no understanding of the job she's seeking or the issues facing the district and still try to fake it.

She looked VERY annoyed when you asked her to commit to a debate with Beers on your show. Apparently there's too many "details" to work out, like a day and time.

That's one debate I wouldn't miss for the world.
