Child survives lightning strike in Green Valley

A young boy was struck by a lightning bolt between 3 and 3:30 p.m. in the Green Valley area as a thunderstorm began to drench the Las Vegas Valley.

The child was out in the open near Valley Verde and Sunset Road, said Katherine Hooper of the Henderson Fire Department. He was taken to Sienna Hospital on Eastern Avenue, Hooper said.

He is alert and breathing, Hooper said.

The storm dropped more than an inch of water in half an hour in some parts of the valley, according to the National Weather Service.

There were reports of people needing a rescue crew to drag them out of floodwaters, Hooper said. "They were coming in so fast we couldn't count them" she said.
