THE READERS SOMETIMES E-MAIL

Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007 | 7:25 a.m.

Readers have opinions and fill my e-mail box, letting me know when mine are right (sometimes) and wrong (often). From time to time,I'll share their comments.

John Gordon

Toronto, Canada

John: The Maple Leafs could use some help on their power play.

I want thank you for writing about the Clark High football team ("Clark High finally wins after 42 losses, Sept. 14). Your article makes me miss Clark High School so much. The Chargers football team serves as an inspiration to all high school football teams that anything is possible if you practice and have passion. Thanks for believing in them.

Roxanne San Jose

Manila, Phil ippines

Roxanne: Well, almost anything is possible if you practice. First, consider Britney Spears. And then there's my team, Indiana, which practices all the time, but hasn't been to the Rose Bowl since 1967.

I enjoyed reading your article about Clark High School ending its 42-game losing streak. You mention that a generation ago Clark was a powerhouse in athletics. It actually went back further than that.

I taught and coached at Clark from 1968 to 1972. In those years, Clark won state championships in football, boys' basketball, wrestling, tennis and baseball. My source was my four Clark Cavalcade yearbooks.

Scott Iverson

St. George, Utah

Scott: While I am quite certain my old school never won a state championship in anything, I can't be sure, because my old girlfriend still has my yearbooks. And my Three Dog Night records.

Thanks for the wonderful piece on Bill "Wildcat" Morris ("Opening Line," Sept. 17). As the anniversary of his birth approached , I wanted to do or say something about the awesome man who infected this town with his gung-ho personality and irrepressible optimism. I had the pleasure of working for this giant for 10 years, first in athletic promotions and then in his hotel venture, until 1989. He was like a father to me and I still miss him.

Mark Peplowski

Las Vegas

Mark: "There is no person I would rather have as a brother than Bill Morris." That's what Mike O'Callaghan said about Wildcat Morris on the day the latter died. One Nevada icon to another. Telling it like it was.

I could not agree with you more about Beas Hamga and the NCAA ("The Beas Hamga circus," Sept. 17). Somehow this does not seem to be something that should take months to wrap up. Lon Kruger is no doubt one of the top coaches in college basketball , but do the Rebels have the talent without Hamga to replicate last year's run into the dance?

Greg Heiny

Las Vegas

Greg: You know, at first I was going to say no. But then I remembered how Lon Time Comin' worked Bo Ryan and mighty Wisconsin in Chicago last year. Don't put away those dancin' shoes just yet.

As a Badger fan who was there for the tailgate party ("Fired up and seeing red," Sept. 10), I was wondering if you could shed some light on a question I had. The grilling help came from Tucson, as you mentioned. But where did the brats come from? Were they Johnsonville's from Wisconsin? I thought they tasted a little foreign.

Ken Breitenfeldt

Milwaukee

Ken: My sources tell me the brats were the real deal. Did you wash them down with our drinking water instead of a Budweiser? That might explain the foreign taste.

Thank you for the wonderful story on Max McNab ("Opening Line," Sept. 10). Although he played a bit before my time, I feel an emptiness in my heart with his passing. I cannot imagine what it must have been like to skate between Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay.

Bob Wells

Las Vegas

Bob: The Big Guy behind the bench upstairs must have needed somebody for his checking line.
