Letter: War with Iran could be beginning of the end
Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007 | 7:23 a.m.
The Kyl-Lieberman Iran amendment, passed in the House on Sept. 26, could clear the way for a declaration of war with Iran. War with Iran appears likely because, if our civil and military leaders are to be believed (and that's a big stretch nowadays), Iran is arming terrorists in Iraq.
People forget that the United States armed and trained the mujahedeen in Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation. I'm sure the Soviets considered the mujahedeen terrorists. If the Soviet Union had done to us what we want to do to Iran, we would either be speaking Russian today or we'd be piles of radioactive cinders.
I'm not saying we should condone or tolerate Iran's alleged arming of terrorists. But all-out war is not the answer, just as it was not the answer for the Soviet Union.
The Afghanistan occupation helped to destroy the Soviet Union. There's a good chance that war in Afghanistan, Iraq and, it appears more and more likely, Iran could lead to ours.
