Flashpoint:

The prospect of County Commissioner Chip Maxfield declining to run…

Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007 | 7:19 a.m.

The prospect of County Commissioner Chip Maxfield declining to run for reelection, a subject of whispers, was out in the open Monday when the Sun's Tony Cook quoted the incumbent as saying, "I am running for office unless I change my mind." Shermanesque, that ain't. Las Vegas Councilman Larry Brown has all but announced a challenge to Maxfield, so some will figure he doesn't want to confront a post-G-Sting campaign that has not been pleasant for any incumbent. But it's also an open secret that Maxfield's wife, Kathy, would love for her husband to retire. If he did, it might be a poetic bookmark to G-Sting because it was almost exactly eight years ago Maxfield erased the man who started it all: bagman Lance Malone.
