Letter: Convenience takes back seat to education

Monday, Sept. 24, 2007 | 7:17 a.m.

In response to the Las Vegas Sun's Sept. 18 story, "Schools juggle to figure out what's fair," I would like to say that it is very difficult to manage a regular schedule when you have children of different ages. However, as parents we shouldn't be looking at the inconvenience of our children's schedules, we should be more concerned with the quality of the education they are receiving.

With classroom overcrowding and failing Nevada schools, I am more than happy to have my children on a year-round schedule - which they currently are - if that ensures they are more individualized in the classroom and have a better learning experience. With such a lengthy summer break in the traditional school schedule, children lose much of what they have learned throughout the year.

Overall, I think that year-round is better option. The department of parks and recreation provides the Safekey program to care for children during the track breaks of year-round school to ease the burden on working parents.

No matter which schedule is chosen, you will always have some unhappy parents. So, what is fair is providing the best route to better academic achievement for our children.
