Letter: Low taxes benefit casinos, but not state
Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007 | 1:27 a.m.
It was interesting to read the Sun's Sept. 12 story about all the tax dollars that our Nevada casinos pay each year. I was totally underwhelmed after reading about the billion-plus profit made by the casinos in the month of July of this year.
Macau, located in communist China, collected 2.07 billion U.S. dollars in 2005 and that was before the Venetian and Wynn were built and operating. Our low taxes benefit the casinos that choose to spread their wealth in foreign countries.
When are our legislators going to wake up and see that casino taxes do not benefit the state as much as their ads are trying to tell us? We are still behind in education, transportation and social services. By the way, the ads are paid for with tax-dollar subsidies going to these wealthy casinos. Even the casino owners themselves should be aware of the inequities paying 6.75 percent here in taxes versus 35 percent in China.
