Letter: The real scoop on legal brothels

Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007 | 7:39 a.m.

Reading the most recent column from Bob Herbert of The New York Times, which appeared in the Sept. 12 Las Vegas Sun, one would think that illegal prostitution no longer existed in New York City. Now Mr. Herbert seems to be moving on to the legal brothels of Nevada to remove the last vestige of what he perceives to be equally bad.

The fact that the women working in the legal brothels of Nevada are given the finest medical protection possible seems to have escaped his eagle eye. Even worse, as he said in his column, some of these girls work during the night. I would suspect that his next campaign will be to eliminate all night and graveyard work throughout the United States. I would bet you could still hail a taxi at 3 a.m. in New York City. So I would get on that first, Mr. Herbert.

The fact that every woman working in the legal industry here in Nevada must be cleared by law enforcement prohibits the movement of illegal overseas types into our system, but Mr. Herbert seems to want to ignore all the facts in this issue and present a one-sided New York City opinion of something happening 2,500 miles away.

Also, attacking the mayor of Las Vegas for voicing the absolute truth about all this reveals Mr. Herbert's stupidity and naivete about the real world. There seems to be something that clouds the mind when columnists write about sexual activity.

The legal industry is completely dedicated to the elimination of illegal prostitution with all the attendant problems including lack of medical care, destructive street pimps and the exploitation of innocent and imported women from around the world. This is the real problem that he has ignored.
