Letter: Bush pulling a bait and switch in Iraq
Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007 | 7:39 a.m.
Is anyone tired of President Bush's bait and switch tactics?
First, there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Congress was duped into authorizing the invasion of a sovereign nation, and a short time later the president declared "mission accomplished."
Then we search all over for those WMDs, but when it turns out when there were none , the president changed our mission to " remove a vicious dictator and help the people of Iraq establish a democracy." So, apparently, the "mission" was not "accomplished," was it?
This spring the president asked Congress to authorize a surge, whereby we would increase the number of troops in Iraq to stabilize the country and allow the Iraqi government to accomplish a series of goals. Results were to be reported in September.
We just got the results. Here comes the bait and switch. According to multiple reports, including the one from Gen. David Petraeus, the Iraqi government has failed to meet nearly all of the goals that the surge was supposed to provide time for. But Bush is now telling us that the surge is working.
Another "mission accomplished" and "heckuva job, Brownie" from our commander-in-chief.
Will the next bait and switch result in our troops fighting another war in Iran? Stay tuned. And God help us all.
