LOOKING IN ON: EDUCATION
Sometimes it's hard not to blame the messenger. Particularly when the message is that a school schedule is being changed and the messenger is the school principal.

Past Two Winners of WSOP Main Event Not Great for the Game
Harrah's Entertainment made an incredibly shrewd business decision in 2003 when it acquired the rights to the World Series of Poker, and the company has done a decent job with the event and its recognizable brand.
Block on new slots worries industry
A state regulator is worrying that slot machines - already positioned near casino arcades, movie theaters, bowling alleys and restaurants - are creeping into casino recesses that are not sufficiently patrolled.
Editorial: No softballs for Yucca
Before January this committee was headed by Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., a vocal supporter of burying the nation's commercial nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
Public Enemy, Rage bring social conscience to stage
In its third year, Vegoose may have offered its most eclectic lineup yet.
Something old, something new
Every music festival is a gathering of the tribe.
Frontman overcomes Vegoose restlessness
I ran into Umphrey's McGee lead singer Brendan Bayliss at 6 a.m. Sunday in a lobby bar at Mandalay Bay. He's an old college acquaintance, so we exchanged hugs, and then I looked at him, and all I could think of to say was, "Man, you look tired."

The battle over coal is, ahem, burning anew, with nothing much at stake except Nevada's energy future and maybe Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's career. Reid's pummeling of three proposed coal-fired plants in rural Nevada has stirred up some national heavy hitters, who are now advertising in the state to try to combat the senator's, ahem, scorched coal strategy. In fact, the world's largest coal company has hired local talent and is buying ads and a coal trade group has done the same. But Reid has his allies, too, including environmentalists and, recently, the state chapter of a national architect's ...
Letter: How Steinbrenner has cursed his team
New York Yankees manager Joe Torre departed following the defeat of the Yankees in the recent American League playoffs. Amid a storm of controversy over George Steinbrenner's crude and cruel tactics to force him out, the Yankees now have their own version of a baseball curse. With many of the players with free agent status unknown and uncertain, the makeup of the 2008 roster and management bodes poorly for the Yankees.
Letter: Out-of-control growth will lead to demise
You have to question the reason and sanity of cramming more than 70 percent of Nevada's population into one valley, the Las Vegas Valley. In the past 15 years or so the quality of life in the Las Vegas Valley has rapidly deteriorated with increased crime, traffic congestion, school crowding, teacher shortages, loss of affordable housing and land prices exceeding $600,000 an acre, to name a few ills.
Editorial: Jailhouse politics
Young had proposed building a jail from modular buildings for low-level offenders near the county's wastewater treatment plant. That was a year and a half ago, in the middle of a heated primary for a Clark County Commission seat. Nearby residents were upset that the county might build a jail there, and both candidates came out against the proposal.
Editorial: A disgusting display
FEMA officials gave the media only 15 minutes' notice of the Tuesday briefing, making it impossible for reporters to get there in time.
Letter: Politics played no role in disaster response
California is hardly a red state: Both U.S. senators, the majority of congressional representatives and the majority of state legislators are Democrats. Louisiana voted for George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004, and California voted against him. Furthermore, many, if not most, of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's Republican colleagues consider him a borderline Republican at best. How did California get to be a red state?
Democrats choosy in making campaign stops
The Democratic presidential candidates are making far fewer visits to Nevada than they have to Iowa and New Hampshire, where they seem to be showing up at every small -town street corner.

I totally disagree with the government stepping in to help homeowners who have put themselves in the situation of possibly losing their homes because they have chosen to live above their means.
Letter: Iraq and the wildfires: Is there a connection?
On May 11 California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, commenting on the Guard there, said: "The only area where we run thin is the equipment, because a lot of equipment has gone to Iraq, and it doesn't come back when the troops come back."
