Letter: Wall didn’t work in Berlin, and won’t for us

Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007 | 7:16 a.m.

In reading Victor Landa's Oct. 21 column about the absurdity of fencing the border for security purposes, I have to agree with him.

Fences are not the answer to stopping illegals from entering our country. I remember in my younger years, another nation - East Germany - that put up a perimeter of fences and walls, with gun towers and mine fields, for "security" purposes. It was meant to keep its people from leaving.

The fence and wall no longer exist. Why? Because locks only keep out honest people and fences only keep cattle penned up. Security is not something you can build around you for protection.
