Letter: Make casinos and developers pay up

Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007 | 7:45 a.m.

Regarding Denise Kelley's Oct. 22 letter, "Time to take state back from special interests":

It sounds as if Ms. Kelley doesn't understand how this game is played. Who does she think will end up paying a "gross receipts tax"? Certainly not the greedy corporations. All fees and taxes get passed on to us.

As the Democrats say: We're going to raise taxes on "big" (it's always "big") oil companies, while the oil companies just laugh and pass that tax on to us - we pay it. It's how the Democrats indirectly put more taxes on us.

Take a look at our ridiculously high utility and communication bills - see all those fees and taxes? We pay for this stuff. The casinos and developers have put Nevada in the mess it's in, because they won't pay to solve the problems they've created.

One way to hit them where it hurts is a huge new home tax - make the people moving in pay for all their nice, new, shiny communities. Frankly, I'm sick and tired of supporting the developers. This is a major problem of the Clark County Commission as well - it allows all the nonsense to go on; it doesn't represent us; it dances to the tune of the greedy casino bosses. I say put an 18 percent to 23 percent tax on the casinos. Let them pass that along to the tourists.
