Letter: Washington deceit calls for an outcry
Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007 | 7:03 a.m.
Thank God for newspapers from which we gain information in detail on current events. I am constantly amazed by the myriad commentaries, many with accompanying cartoons or editorial cartoons published alone on some famous or infamous subject published by our newspapers.
Often a commentary appears that is a shocking revelation, causing me to reflect on its effect for those involved and its lingering, deleterious subsequent events, ruining lives and careers.
An example of this was a remarkable commentary by New York Times editorial writer Adam Cohen that recently was published in the Las Vegas Sun ("GOP arms itself with Justice Department," Oct. 14), suggesting the probable use of selective prosecutions by our Justice Department as a method of helping Republicans win elections. After reading the commentary, and considering the demeanor of the current administration, I am convinced of what Cohen wrote about.
Except for Cohen, who was interested in informing the public of the nefarious activities of the politicians and their minions, where is the outcry? I haven't seen or heard any other commentary regarding this subject.
Are we becoming so accustomed to such machinations by the politicians that we find such things common and not surprising, perhaps even accepted? Questionable activities under the protection of the legal umbrella of the Justice Department cannot and should not be condoned.
This is justice? This is definitely not what I learned in civics classes in school.
I'm sure there are those who are as disturbed as I, but, engrossed in their daily responsibilities, prefer that others take action. Hopefully, they will react properly at the next polls, perhaps even complain to members of Congress.
