Letter: Small-businesses taxed enough already
Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2007 | 7:04 a.m.
Once again the business cycle has taken a downturn and the green-eating monster called "Government" wants more. Deja vu from 2003. Because of those repressive business taxes, the state found itself with $600 million extra.
What happened to that money? Government squandered it. Now it wants more. We in small business say no! We do pay our fair share - and then some.
Our "fair share" seems to increase anytime the state needs more money. But big gaming apparently already pays its fair share, according to its ads, even though its "fair share" is significantly less than other states' gaming tax.
So now tax revenue is down because business is down, so the answer is to tax business more? No. The answer is for government to tighten its belt - like the rest of us. Sorry Jim Rogers, chancellor of Nevada's higher education system, once again you are wrong. You can't just take your ball and go home by refusing to submit a new budget. Act responsibly and do it - or hopefully Gov. Jim Gibbons will do it for you.
