Letter: Teachers union shines light on revenue source

The Las Vegas Sun's Oct. 10 "On shaky ground" article shows a brilliant effort by the teachers union to circumvent the gaming folks' political strength. The teachers union's proposition to increase the Nevada gaming tax has accomplished one thing already: It has drawn the gaming folks onto the middle of Main Street.

The more the gaming folks complain, the more the Nevada electorate becomes aware of the potential of this proposition. The proposition requires about 59,000 signatures, and the teachers union has 28,000 members ready to sign.

The Sun's article also clearly illustrates the political power of the gaming lobby. With billions of dollars leaving our state to build casinos in Asia, this proposition is timely and relevant.

A constitutional proposition is the only remedy the teachers have. The humor here is that it took the teachers union to educate us regarding a tax revenue source that can and should be adjusted periodically.
