Letter: Bush’s actions are within his powers
Friday, Oct. 12, 2007 | 7:23 a.m.
I'd like to issue a rebuttal to Stanley Goldfarb's Oct. 9 letter, "It's time the GOP breaks with Bush":
A time of war is a situation when the executive branch of the federal government may need to expand powers to deal with specific circumstances. This administration has shown the backbone to fight this war on terror while congressional Democrats take on the role of pacifists.
Mr. Goldfarb's comments on debt are way off base. The Bush tax cuts have produced the highest revenue on record for the federal government. Get your facts straight.
In prosecuting this war, this administration seeks a better result than the wars that were started by John Kennedy in Vietnam and Harry Truman in Korea. Let's finish the job.
Finally, the Bush administration proposed funding for children's health care for the poor, but the president does not wish to expand it to middle-class families, which the Democrats propose. Currently 12 states use State Children's Health Insurance Program funds to pay for adult health care.
Wisconsin spends 75 percent of the funds it receives on adults, Minnesota 63 percent and New Jersey 43 percent. The proposed legislation will expand coverage to some families earning $82,000. This is nothing more than a creeping socialistic approach to national health care.
