Letter: Smoking ban will be effective one day
Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007 | 6:45 a.m.
As a bartender, I am so tired of the complaining about the smoking ban. It's a new law and it's going to take awhile to be implemented properly. We didn't wake up and observe the changes to our civil and moral rights the day after Congress passed the Civil Rights Act.
It's going to take awhile for proper civil enforcement and, in time, to become second nature. The best thing you can do is not support the place and inform the health department of your observations.
Why can't we just have taverns or bars that have a sign that designates whether it is a smoking or nonsmoking establishment? That way there are no surprises going in and we have a choice, and so do the tavern owners.
With that everybody wins and no sour grapes. This would prove once again that capitalism and democracy can coexist.
