A Moment Captured: The music’s blaring, but does anybody care?
Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007 | 7:23 a.m.
There's a dance party at the park , but no one is there to hear. Or so it seemed at Desert Breeze Park on a recent sunny afternoon.
There was a party going on, which brought out the boom box - a kick back to its 1980s hey day, pre-iPods . But there was hardly a person within ear shot, aside from the children hidden behind the distant trees, jumping in the inflatable bounce-house set up to keep the youngest entertained.
It was an odd encounter with the folding TV table amid the always healthy green grass in the middle of the desert, but for more than an hour the blaring Ethiopian music carried far in its high-pitched melodies and driving rhythms, though apparently to no one's interest.
Normally music is the focal point. But today people gathered yards away, playing soccer, sharing snacks and setting up tents for the event while the music was forgotten.
Perhaps that was just as far as the electrical cord would reach.
