Letter: Withdrawing troops makes sense to most

First of all, let me say why I think people write and read the letters to the editor. I believe it is a valid way of discovering whether other people agree with them on various issues. It is interesting that both the letters and the polls indicate that President Bush is supported by about only one out of every four Americans. It is also interesting that these same Bush supporters will complain when a minority is making waves at the expense of the majority.
Second, I would like to point out that many of the arguments we hear about whether we should continue our efforts in Iraq depend on the reader or listener accepting the scenario predicted by the pundit. Withdrawing troops results in fewer deaths and less taxpayers' dollars spent. I challenge anyone to find a flaw in that.
A critic might argue that withdrawing troops will give the message to the troops that we do not support them. Says who? Isn't that a reach? Which argument tells the troops that we love them and support them best: (a) Come home to your families and loved ones and stay alive, or (b) Stay there until you get maimed or killed?
Last , I believe that if we Americans were told the truth about how the billions of dollars are being spent in Iraq, it would make us quite angry. All Americans support the spending of money to keep the troops safe and well armed.
Perhaps one day a newspaper will reveal how the rest of the money is being spent, with more personnel in nonmilitary roles than soldiers in Iraq. Perhaps we will see the names of the corporations that are reaping profits as long as the war continues and our young people die.
